How To Attract More Termites To Your Home

Do you feel like you don't have enough termites in your life? Does your home just feel empty without these wood-munching insects? You can increase your termite count by giving them things they like. Follow these 3 tips to encourage termites to invade your home.

Feed Them!

Termites never turn down a meal. Especially when you make it easy for them to get it. If you leave certain items near your home, it will serve as an invitation to all of the termites in your area. Since termites are always looking for their next meal, you can easily entice them to come into your home.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Paper
  • Wood, or wood products

Termites live underground, so you will need to make sure each of these items are on the ground, not high up where it's harder for them to reach. Avoid having pressure treated wood or redwood. Termites don't like these types of wood.

Keep It Moist!

Termites require a lot of moisture in order to survive. Without moisture, termites can't make their lovely and ingenious mud tubes.

Mud tubes are the termites' most clever invention. They build long, thin tunnels out of soil and water.

These tunnels protect them as they travel back and forth from their food. It hides them from predators and humans. You can typically tell if you have termites in your home by spotting these tunnels in your basement or elsewhere.

Make sure the area around your home is as moist as possible. The drier it is, the less likely it is that the termites will come by. If the soil is dry, then termites won't be able to build their mud tunnels.

Also, make sure you keep lots of plants near your home's foundation. Plants provide a lot of the moisture these insects love.

Warm It Up!

Unfortunately, termites tend not to be active during the winter. However, if you're lucky, there may be ways to entice them to come anyway.

If you provide a warm area for your wood-eating buddies, they will want to stay in your home for the entire winter season. What could be better?

If you draw them in with food, they will realize that your home is a nice, warm place to stay, and devour. If you want to see if termites have accepted your invitation, check the warmer areas of your home, like your heater, furnace, etc.

Getting termites to infest your home is easy. All you need to do is give them what they want: moisture, food, and warmth. If you follow these steps, you will have termites lining up to chow down on your home. If you find these methods work a little too well and the infestation has grown larger than you can handle, you may want to contact a pest control company, like Paramount Exterminating Co.
